Ethanol carries less energy per litre than petrol. That is chemistry, not a conspiracy. How much your tank notices is where the shouting starts: ministries quote a few percent, older NITI papers quote more for some fleets, and independent road tests sometimes land higher still.

Why any drop shows up at all
Ethanol's energy density is lower than petrol's (commonly cited around 30–34% less energy per litre for neat ethanol versus petrol). In an E20 blend, only part of the tank is ethanol, so the theoretical hit is smaller than 30%. Higher octane from ethanol can also help some engines burn more efficiently, which is why calibrated E20 vehicles are often said to lose less than older E10-tuned ones.
That physics lesson is why "zero effect for everyone" was never a serious claim. It is also why "20% less mileage because 20% ethanol" is bad arithmetic dressed as activism.
What ministries told Parliament
Two government ranges circulated in July 2026 coverage (Times of India, Economic Times):
- Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (Rajya Sabha reply, mid-July): reduction in fuel economy for certain older vehicles designed for E10 is generally limited to about 3–5%.
- Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (Lok Sabha reply, late July), citing ARAI–SIAM–IOCL work: BS-III, BS-IV and BS-VI vehicles designed for E10 may see fuel efficiency reduced by 2–6% on E20, depending on category and vintage.
Both ministries stress that driving style, traffic, tyre pressure, maintenance and AC use also move the needle. Petroleum messaging also highlights higher octane, anti-knock behaviour and cleaner combustion as offsets on the performance side.
When two ministries disagree by a percentage point, that is still closer than your uncle's "I lost 25%."
What older planning papers said
NITI Aayog's 2021 ethanol-blending roadmap (widely quoted again during the 2025–26 backlash) estimated roughly:
- 6–7% efficiency drop for four-wheelers designed for E0 and calibrated around E10
- 3–4% for two-wheelers in a similar framing
- 1–2% for four-wheelers designed for E10 and calibrated for E20
The same report recommended that higher ethanol blends be priced below ordinary petrol to compensate for lower calorific value and improve acceptance. That pricing recommendation is politically awkward now that E20 is the default retail grade and ethanol-free fuel sits in the premium aisle.
What road tests and drivers report
Autocar India's real-world testing of older BS4 / early BS6 cars on E20 (versus a reconstructed lower-ethanol comparison) reported fuel-economy variances on the order of roughly 5–12% across models in that feature, with examples such as a Grand i10 near 9% and a Dzire above 12% in their published table. The magazine noted methodological caveats about recreating older blends and said material upgrade kits, where offered, address seals more than efficiency unless ECU calibration changes.
Anecdotal driver reports online range from "barely noticed" to double-digit drops. Anecdotes are real lived experience. They are not controlled tests. Traffic, tyre wear, AC use and even how carefully someone logged trips can fake a crisis or hide one.
How to read your own tank without losing the plot
- Log at least 3–4 full tanks the same way (trip meter reset, similar routes) before declaring a percentage.
- Separate city and highway averages. Congestion can dwarf blend effects.
- Check tyre pressure and service status before blaming ethanol alone.
- Compare your car's design era: post-2023 E20-compatible models are expected to lose less than older E10 calibrations, per planning and OEM messaging.
- Remember cost: even a 5% mileage hit on ₹100/L fuel is a different household bill than the same hit plus a forced jump to ₹160/L "choice" fuel.

What this site will not do
We will not declare a single national mileage penalty as proven fact. We will not erase government and OEM ranges. We will not erase independent tests that land higher. Consumer anger about opaque rollout and missing affordable E0 options can be valid even when a specific viral mileage claim is exaggerated.
The policy ask associated with the wider movement, as reported in media, is still fuel choice at reasonable prices plus transparency. Energy security and farmer-income arguments from the government remain part of the same story. Hold both thoughts without melting your ECU.
